UPDATE: Line re-opened at 2pm on Friday
Train services between Bargoed and Rhymney have been halted because of a landslide. Services will not re-start until Monday.
Last night heavy rainwater overwhelmed a culvert and caused a 5m-wide hole in a banking near Station Row, Tirphil.
The landslide has brought down power cables and has left a gas main exposed, but not damaged.
A statement on Arriva Trains website said: “Due to landslide affecting the track between Rhymney and Bargoed, Arriva Trains Wales Valley Lines services were severely disrupted this morning.
“Arriva Trains Wales is working with Network Rail towards resuming a normal service as soon as possible. We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused by the disruption.”
A spokesman for Caerphilly Council said the hole left behind by the landslide was five metres wide and five metres deep and that it could be a mine shaft.
He added: “Council staff have made the area safe and worked at the site throughout the night.
“The road remains closed and the council is working closely with various agencies to resolve the situation as soon as possible.”
A replacement bus service between Bargoed and Rhymney is in operation. Rail bosses have said services will not resume until Monday.
