The dangers of unwanted cold callers was made apparent to one sprightly pensioner at a trading standards event last week.
Marian Davies, from Bargoed, joined others at the town’s Young at Heart 50+ club for the event organised by Communities First.
Cllr Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Trading standards’ presence at this event was to broaden the awareness of doorstep crime and the very serious implications it can have, particularly on vulnerable residents. It is imperative that we educate our residents of the dangers to ensure their health and happiness.”
Recent research has shown that pensioners living on their own are most at risk from bogus callers pretending to be officials and rogue traders.
Attendees at the event were reminded that ID should be sought from all doorstep callers and checked by calling the telephone number in the phone book and not on the ID card.
Never let anyone in if in doubt about their motives or identity.
