Caerphilly Labour AM Jeff Cuthbert has urged the Environment Agency to use its powers to suspend operations at Bryn Compost, near Gelligaer.
Despite a petition by residents over the site’s “smell”, Environment Minister Jane Davidson has said the site can remain open after the Environment Agency ruled there was no risk of serious pollution from the site.
Mr Cuthbert however, has said that these claims miss the point.
He said: “The issue the residents have raised in their petition to the Welsh Assembly with the site is nothing to do with risks to public health.
“It is to do with the on-going strong odours from the waste processed by the plant that is a constant nuisance to local residents.
“I know that Welsh Government Minister Jane Davidson accepts that there is a problem at this site. The Environment Agency also know that they have to be proactive in dealing with it.
“Bryn Compost Ltd seem to be suggesting that the odour problem is not serious and are playing the whole thing down.
“However, I know full well that this is a very serious matter for residents of Gelligaer, Nelson and Penybryn.
“I repeat my call to the Environment Agency to use their powers to suspend operations at the site until they are satisfied that new processes and equipment are in place at Bryn Compost Ltd so as to end this on-going problem.”
The company has previously said it was working on plans to stop the problem by building an indoor anaerobic digestion facility.
