Caerphilly town’s historic indoor market in Pentrebane Street is to re-open this weekend after being closed for more than a decade.
The relaunch of the market – which was first opened in 1923 – is the brainchild of Caerphilly brothers David and Alan Prosser.
An officially ceremony to mark the re-opening will be held on Saturday at 12 noon. It looks set to be a busy weekend for Caerphilly town centre as a Medieval Christmas Fayre is also due to be held.
Cllr Ron Davies, cabinet member for regeneration and planning, has been invited to help open the market and is looking forward to the big weekend.
He said: “The relaunch of this historic indoor market is a welcome boost for Caerphilly and demonstrates the increasing confidence in the town centre.
“I’m delighted to be involved in the event and hope that all the visitors who are in town to enjoy the Christmas Fayre will call in to show their support to the market traders as well as all the other shops in the town centre.”
The first stage of the reopening will see around 30 stalls open followed in a few weeks by an area in the market encouraging temporary craft and antique stalls.
Stalls already taken include a butcher, a cafe, bookstall and a sweet shop.
The revival of the indoor market will be seen as a boost to the area.
Last year plans for a multimillion pound redevelopment of the upper part of Caerphilly town centre were derailed because of a lack of public funding.
In August this year it was revealed that pub chain JD Wetherspoon had shown interest in taking over the disused CoCo building at the top of town.
