Caerphilly teenagers become Britain’s youngest parents at 14

Two 14-year-old schoolchildren from Caerphilly have become Britain’s youngest parents.

April Webster and boyfriend Nathan Fishbourne are front page news in The Sun newspaper on Saturday after April gave birth to son Jamie.

She told the newspaper: “Jamie wasn’t planned, but I’m going to be a great mum for him. He’s perfect and I’m going to give him everything he ever wants.”

The teen discovered she was pregnant the day before her 14th birthday and Jamie was born via Caesarean section weighing 8lb 14 oz on November 15.

The pregnancy ran smoothly, although Jamie was born with a malformed oesophagus which hampered his feeding.

After an operation and 11 days in hospital, he was declared healthy and allowed home.

According to The Sun the pair, who met at St Cenydd School, began dating in September last year and were “too embarrassed” to tell their parents they were having sex.

Nathan, who has vowed to be a good father, said he used a condom once but did not like it.

Four-week old Jamie is currently living at the home of April and her parents, Maria, 36, and Jeff, 38.

Nathan hopes to have the baby at the weekends, but custody arrangements have apparently caused arguments between the young couple.

He said: “I’ve not thought about our future yet as that’s a long way off. I’m happy to be a dad. When I see Jamie I do things for him, just like any dad. I help change him and stuff.”

Caerphilly Council leader Lindsay Whittle, commenting via Facebook, has said Caerphilly Council will do everything it can to support the couple.

Between 2006 and 2008, the average conception rate per 1,000 females in Wales for under 18s was 44.7. Caerphilly had a rate of 48.3.
