Metal thefts fall by half in Caerphilly County Borough

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Wednesday March 14th, 2012.

Metal thefts in Caerphilly County Borough have fallen by 50% since August 2011, according to the council.

The local authority has said a proactive partnership with Gwent Police is the reason behind the fall.

Over the last three years, the number of metal thefts has increased in line with the value of scrap metal.

The council has been a victim with bins and benches stolen.

Thefts of metal have increased dramatically over the last three years as the value of scrap metal has increased, with council property among the items stolen.

The council and Gwent Police have been working to apply legislation under The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 1964, in order to register all scrap metal dealers and metal collectors in the borough.

This has proven effective with numbers of metal collectors registered within the borough rising from 81 in June 2011 to 151 by January 2012.

Rob Hartshorn, Head of Public protection at Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “We are committed to aiding the police to reduce all crime across our county borough. Caerphilly is actually leading the way in reducing metal theft in Wales, and is assisting the Gwent Police in rolling out the initiative with other local authorities across Gwent.”
