Caerphilly Council admits to dumping residents’ recycling in landfill

Caerphilly County Borough Council has admitted it sent some recyclable material and food waste to landfill as it battled against the snow.

Many rubbish and recycling collections could not be made by the council because of the recent cold and icy conditions. To get rid of the backlog of rubbish on the county borough’s streets, the council made the decision to collect the recyclables in the same vehicle as landfill waste.

Explaining the decision to Letsrecycle.com, council leader Lindsay Whittle said: “It was a just a one off, as all the rubbish was building up on the streets and people were complaining that their bins hadn’t been collected. It was a one-off and one week’s worth.

“It will never happen again, we had to clear it. We have had terrible snow, it was about two foot in the hills and we just couldn’t get to the trucks, or get the trucks moving safely, as the hills were quite treacherous.”

The council has been asked by Caerphilly Observer to provide details on how much recyclable material was sent to landfill and we are awaiting a response.

A statement on the council’s website has said all rubbish and recycling collections should be completed by Friday.

Oh great!!! Nice one.. I spend my time washing all the cans jars etc.. and taking time to put my recycling in another bin at home then into the main bin outside and you do this?????

Well The bins here have only been collected once in 6 weeks!!!! so I hope your coming soon because the place is a right tip! Denscombe is the Area if you want to send in some staff

Oh and next time we get snow.. can you make sure you grit the roads first before you see to the staff carpark in Tredomen.. the Photograph was evidence on the BBC Wales news website!

And as for.. the refuse people are unable to collect rubbish as they are clearing the town Centre and Shopping court centre? Everyone knows that was untrue..as the snow was there for over a week..

Plus all the OAP Flats and OAP homes were not taken care of on the entrances for over a week also, so they couldnt even get to the bins.

That really is appalling- at that time of year there would have been even more recycling than usual and it's all gone into landfill- shame on you Caerphilly Council
