Plaid Cymru councillors campaigning for a Yes vote in Caerphilly town

Plaid Cymru councillors in Caerphilly hit the streets to campaign for a ‘Yes’ vote in March’s referendum on greater powers for the Welsh Assembly.

Yes for Wales campaigners were in Caerphilly town on Saturday handing out leaflets.

Councillors have also tabled a notice of motion urging authority members to support law-making powers for the Assembly within the existing devolved areas.

Council leader Lindsay Whittle, who is a South Wales East regional candidate at the May elections, said: “A Yes vote would signal the end of a deeply unsatisfactory system in which laws made in Wales have to be scrutinised and approved by both the House of Commons and House of Lords.

“This system doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world and it means that important legislation such as making school transport safer is delayed. That can’t be right.

“A Yes vote would mean a much simpler and more cost effective government which is what we need.

“We will be campaigning right across the county borough for a positive vote on March 3 which would be a step forward in enhancing our democracy.”
