Caerphilly Council to lose three councillors in election ward shake-up

Caerphilly County Borough Council could lose three councillors in a shake-up by the Local Government Boundary Commission.

The proposed redrawing of the council ward map would see the number of councillors go down from 73 to 70.

The ward seats of Bargoed, Gilfach and Aberbargoed could be merged into one with four councillors instead of the current six.

Other wards such as the Penyrheol would become the Trecenydd ward with five councillors instead of four, while St James may lose one councillor.

Under the plans, Crosskeys would merge with Risca West and will lose its name, although no councillors would go.

Cefn Fforest and Pengam wards, which each have two councillors, could be combined into a three councillor ward.

Councillor Allan Pritchard, deputy leader and cabinet member for constitutional affairs, welcomed the changes and said: “Overall, I believe the Boundary Commission for Wales has approached its review of the electoral arrangements in a consistent way.”

Residents in the county can respond to the proposals by writing to The Secretary, Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales, Caradog House, 1 – 6 St Andrew’s Place, Cardiff, CF10 3BE, by March 22.
