Volunteers from Caerphilly-based PHS Group have given a garden at St Martin’s School a ‘Ground Force’ style makeover.

The volunteering project, organised by charity Business in the Community, saw ten PHS employees get busy at the school’s art garden where they got busy painting pipes, walls, benches and tyres as well as planting new plants and shrubs.

Darren Latham, the school’s head of art, said: “We are very grateful to PHS for choosing our school as a community project and also to Business in the Community who provided the link to PHS.

“Pupils will now benefit from an area where they can relax during their breaks and also learn in an attractive environment.”

Roland Amos, Technical Services Manager of PHS added: “As a local employer we are keen to invest in our community and the opportunity at St Martin’s School was a perfect way for our team to come together and give something back to our local community. I hope that the school will benefit from this project for many years to come.”

Alexandra Brill, from Business in the Community, explained the benefits of companies volunteering their staff to such projects.

She said: “Just a few hours of giving can have a long-term positive impact on the local community and provide the opportunity for employees to develop skills, improve team-working, and pride in their company. We are delighted with the success of this project and look forward to returning to St Martin’s with more employee volunteers on Friday May 18 for the national day of employee volunteering, Give and Gain Day.”
