Aberbargoed man prosecuted by council over litter drop

An Aberbargoed man has been successfully prosecuted by Caerphilly County Borough Council for dropping litter and not paying the subsequent fine.

Matthew Meyrick, age 30, of Commercial Street, Aberbargoed was initially £75, but after non-payment was hauled up in front of Caerphilly Magistrates’ Court and was ordered to pay a total of £175.

The defendant attended court and represented himself, pleading guilty to the offence. He was ordered to pay a fine of £75, court costs of £85 and a £15 victim surcharge within 14 days.

Rob Hartshorn, the council’s head of public protection said: “Caerphilly County Borough Council does not tolerate littering, whatever form it takes. There is no excuse for littering and those responsible will face consequences for their actions.

“Where non-payment of a Fixed Penalty Notice occurs, we will pursue the matter through court without exception. Prosecutions such as this show will hopefully prove to a small minority that failing to take their social responsibilities seriously could cost them dearly.”
