Bedwas High School and Markham Primary School have become the first secondary and primary schools in Caerphilly County Borough to get a healthy schools award.
The two schools have been given the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Scheme National Quality Award in their respective age categories.
Only 19 schools throughout Wales have achieved the award. Schools run their own schemes to encourages pupils to live a healthier lifestyle.
Sue Rivers, deputy head at Bedwas co-ordinates the scheme in the school.
She said: “This award reflects the high priority we place on caring and healthy lifestyles. We have worked successfully through the many phases of the Healthy Schools Scheme since our former head teacher Mrs Cook introduced the pilot scheme in Bedwas High in 2000.
“It has been a challenging yet very productive journey in that all initiatives have been for the benefit of the school and local community. Partnership working has been crucial to the success of this award and we are grateful to all the local and national agencies that have supported Bedwas High School to become a health promoting school.”
Cllr Rhianon Passmore, cabinet member for education and lifelong learning congratulated the schools and said: “This is a fantastic achievement. Everyone involved should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved.”
