Council engineer from Bargoed wins award

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:26, Tuesday July 24th, 2012.

An engineer employed by Caerphilly County Borough Council has been awarded a top award by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Andrew Gould, of Bargoed, scooped the ICE Wales Ground Engineering Group Prize for ‘Best 2nd Year Student Performance in Geotechnics’.

As an Assistant Engineer in the council’s Network Management Section, Andrew is responsible for overseeing work on all public highways.

Cllr Tom Williams, cabinet member for highways, transportation and engineering, said: “Andrew is wholly deserving of this award. The commitment and dedication he has shown within his role is second to none and it is always gratifying to see employees take full advantage of their support and take it upon themselves to improve.

“Andrew first arrived in the council’s Highways Department in 2003, working in the customer care section, and has shown great determination and skill to progress through from Highways Inspector to Assistant Engineer. We are delighted that his efforts have been formally recognised with this award.”

The challenges faced by Andrew in his day-to-day role include working with open excavations, traffic management, ground stabilisation and ensuring the safety of both the ground and the workforce.
