Family-owned bakery Brace’s will sponsor a new art exhibition – made of Marmite and toast.

The Crumlin-based firm will provide the canvas to artist Nathan Wyburn’s work – hundreds of slices of bread.

The Ebbw Vale artist made his name last year when he appeared on TV’s Britain’s Got Talent and created a Marmite masterpiece of comedian and judge Michael McIntyre.

Nathan, since his appearance on the talent show, has created celebrity portraits of Simon Cowell, Lord Alan Sugar and Olympians including Tom Daley.

He will dedicate his collection to his local community with an exhibition at The General Offices in Ebbw Vale.

His work will be on view from Friday and the exhibition will also incorporate free workshops for local children keen to get crafty with Nathan during their Summer holidays.

Nathan hopes the exhibition will show his gratitude to local supporters who have followed the 22-year-old’s astounding success. His 10ft depiction of tabloid villain Rupert Murdoch recently dominated the front page of The Guardian newspaper and will also be on display at this upcoming exhibition.

Nathan said: “I’ve been using Brace’s bread for my artwork for three years. It’s the bread I’ve eaten growing up so it just seemed fitting when I wanted to us everyday materials for my artwork, to use the bread I eat every day.

‘Brace’s bread is also the squarest, which helps with the proportions of my artwork and ensures the result is the best possible. I’m very grateful for Brace’s support of my First Retrospective exhibition.”

Lydia Whitfield, head of communications at Brace’s, said: “We have been interested in working with Nathan for a while, as he is such a creative and much-loved local artist.

“He and Angharad Collins, manager at The General Offices, are offering free workshops at the exhibition for local Summer schools and youngsters from local community groups and this sits really well with the community support we try and offer at Brace’s.”

  • Nathan Wyburn’s First Retrospective runs at Ebbw Vale’s General Offices from August 10 to 24. Those interested in taking part in Nathan’s workshops should contact the general Offices on 01495 356055.
