Intergenerational Clubs now up to seven in Caerphilly County Borough

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:56, Tuesday August 21st, 2012.

A scheme to improve the relationship between the generations has created seven school clubs where young and old can mingle.

The Intergenerational Clubs are funded by the Safer Caerphilly Community Safety Partnership through the Welsh Government’s Community Cohesion Fund.

They involve older residents of the community attending a school on a weekly basis for one to two hours where they mix with pupils to share experiences. Activities include reading, knitting, bingo, bowls, and board games like snakes and ladders.

Pupils from Lewis School Pengam are also producing a newsletter each term for their senior citizens. At Nant Y Parc Primary School, pupils practice their reading skills.

Cllr Rhianon Passmore, cabinet member for education and lifelong learning, said: “These lunch clubs provide a vital link in the community that bridge the generational gaps, helping to breakdown stereotypes and give both sides positive experiences across the generations.”

It is hoped the number of clubs will increase to at least ten before the end of the year.
