Environment Agency warns of heavy rain over bank holiday weekend

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:25, Friday August 24th, 2012.

Environment Agency Wales is urging people to be alert over the bank holiday weekend as heavy rain is forecast across the country.

A band of slow-moving, heavy showers are due to affect most parts of Wales throughout tomorrow.

While the outlook for Sunday appears improved, a further band of rainfall is also forecast to affect most of Wales on Monday.

There is a risk that these persistent showers could lead to excess surface water on roads and flooding of drains and small streams. There may also be some flooding of fields and low-lying land.

Whilst the majority of rivers should not reach levels of concern, smaller rivers that respond quickly to rainfall could rise rapidly and cause flooding.

Officers will be monitoring the situation closely over the weekend and will take action as necessary to clear blockages from Agency trash screens to reduce the risk of flooding.

People travelling to festivals or heading to campsites over the weekend are urged to take extra care as driving conditions are likely to be particularly hazardous.

People are advised to keep an eye on the forecast, and listen to local news bulletins for details of any disruption in their area.
