Police warning against drug ‘Meow Meow’ after Cwmbran boy, 15, hospitalised.

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Thursday September 13th, 2012.

Gwent Police have issued a warning on the dangers of illegal drug Mephedrone – widely known as “Meow Meow” – after a 15-year-old Cwmbran boy was hospitalised.

The boy has now been discharged from hospital but officers have warned against the dangers of taking the drug.

Meow Meow is an illegal Class B drug is a fine white, or off-white, crystalised powder. Originally sold as a legal alternative to cocaine and amphetamine, it has been illegal to posses or supply it since since April 2010.

The effects of Mephedrone are that users feel euphoric, alert and talkative. However, some users feel anxious and paranoid. The long-term side effects are still largely unknown, but the drug is very addictive.

Inspector Nick McLain, of Torfaen Local Policing Unit, said: “There are some serious side effects to using Meow Meow – these can include heart attack, seizures, sweating and paranoia.

“Apart from the health dangers, being caught in possession of meow meow could mean up to a five year jail sentence.”
