Caerphilly Council’s battery recycling scheme sees 24% increase

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:00, Monday November 26th, 2012.

A battery recycling scheme aimed at schools across Caerphilly County Borough has seen a 24% increase in the number of sign-ups.

Fifty-six schools have signed up for this year’s scheme involving over 17,500 pupils. Last year pupils from 45 schools managed to recycle 1,255kg of batteries.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is working in partnership with European Recycling Platform (ERP), which will supply battery-recycling boxes for each of the schools participating in the scheme. The schools will compete with each other to see who can recycle the most batteries.

Cllr David Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “It is fantastic to get more schools signing up to the Battery Recycling Scheme this year. I’d like to thank all the schools participating as they will help to keep us at the forefront for battery recycling.”

Scott Butler, ERP UK’s managing director, said: “ERP is delighted to continue this schools batteries recycling initiative in partnership with Caerphilly County Borough Council.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to spread the recycling message and I hope there will be a great contest between all the schools to collect the most batteries.”
