Young musicians from across the Caerphilly County Borough recently took part in the Schools’ Young Contemporary Musician of the Year competition.

Over 120 guitarists, drummers, bassists and singers battled it out for the title of ‘Young Musician’ and ‘Young Singer’ of the year with the final being held at the Caerphilly Music Service’s Performing Arts Studio in Pontllanfraith.

The Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Gaynor Oliver, presented the winners with their trophies, and commented on the high standard of performances.

She said: “It has been an honour to present these awards to such talented individuals. Learning a musical instrument can have a powerful impact on a young person’s life, and it is inspiring to see such passion and commitment to music as displayed by these youngsters. Congratulations to the overall winners and to all who took part.”

Luke Moses, a student from Lewis School Pengam won the young Contemporary Composer of the year; Bethan Phillips, from Blackwood Comprehensive won the Contemporary Singer of the year, and Zack Simic, from St. Martin’s Comprehensive, won the Contemporary Musician category on Drums.
