Respect shopworkers this Christmas, says Islwyn MP

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:01, Thursday December 13th, 2012.

“Keep your cool and respect shopworkers this Christmas” is the message from Islwyn MP Chris Evans as he recently joined staff at Tesco Extra in Risca to back shopworkers’ union Usdaw’s ‘Freedom from Fear’ campaign.

New research shows that every minute of the day a shopworker is assaulted, threatened or abused; some 60% of retail staff report being treated aggressively.

Over the Christmas period, crowded shops and frustrated shoppers increase the chances of a shopworker suffering verbal or physical abuse.

Mr Evans said: “With busy stores and crowds of people, shopworkers have a tough job at Christmas. Unfortunately many will be faced with shoppers taking out their frustrations on them.

“As more of us begin our Christmas shopping we should remember that shopworkers should not have to put up with the threat of verbal abuse or physical violence.”

Shouldn't we respect shop workers all the year round?
