Persistent rain predicted across Wales

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:35, Friday December 21st, 2012.

Environment Agency Wales is advising people across Wales to brace themselves for further bands of persistent rain overnight on Friday into Saturday morning and running through until Christmas Eve.

But with land remaining saturated from recent heavy rainfall, any further rain could quickly swell rivers and streams. With some flood alerts already in place, further alerts and warnings are likely for other rivers across the country. Southern areas of Wales will be worst affected.

There is risk of localised flooding of roads and low lying land from blocked drains, ditches and small streams.

Agency officers are currently working in the area checking that rivers are clear of blockages and that Agency defences are in good working order.

People are advised to take extra care while travelling as driving conditions could be hazardous.

Flood water is extremely dangerous and people should not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

Only a few inches of flood water can knock a person off their feet, and two feet of water can float a car.

The Agency is advising people to keep up to date with the latest information in their area by listening to local weather and traffic reports, and viewing the latest information on the Met Office website
