Fresh snow has fallen across Caerphilly County Borough with schools closing and public transport being disrupted.

Stagecoach also pulled some of its bus services across the county borough and Arriva Trains Wales has said disruption to its services is likely.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning of snow. Its forecast reads: “Outbreaks of sleet or snow will affect parts of southwest England and South Wales during Tuesday, extending to other parts of southern England and the south Midlands later.

“Where rain or sleet is currently falling, this is expected to turn increasingly to snow during this afternoon and evening, even at low levels. Some 2 to 5 cm of snow is likely in places with 10 cm or more within the amber warning area and on high ground.

“This could be locally heavy and fall in a short period of time, perhaps just a few hours. The risk extends towards the northeast of the warning area later in the period and persists overnight.”

Martin Young, Met Office Chief Forecaster, said: “The atmosphere is finely balanced across southwestern areas of Britain, with some places seeing heavy rain and others seeing heavy snow on Tuesday.

“There is some uncertainty about exactly where the boundary will lie and everyone should continue to be aware of the risk of severe weather and plan ahead for possible travel delays and disruption to transport.”

Yesterday, Caerphilly County Borough Council revealed its gritting team had spread more than £90,000 of the substance covering a distance of 5,000 miles since Friday.

It has spread around 1,400 tonnes of grit salt since Friday and has another 5,500 tonnes in storage. The council has said its highways teams have been working around the clock to clear roads and have been doing their best to clear side roads and lanes.

Cllr Harry Andrews, leader of the council, said: “We were well prepared to respond to the difficult weather conditions over the last few days and it is clear that our investment in equipment and grit supplies has made a significant impact.
