Islwyn MP to call debate challenging government on Army Career Office closures

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Wednesday February 13th, 2013.

Islwyn MP Chris Evans will challenge the UK Government on the closure of army career offices during a Westminster Hall debate later today (Wednesday February 13).

The Ministry of Defence has recently announced the closure of seven out of 12 Army Career Offices in Wales – traditionally a successful recruiting ground for the British Army.

The debate is scheduled to start between 4.30pm and 5pm and Mr Evans will challenge the Government over the outsourcing of army recruitment to private firm Capita last year.

Mr Evans said: “The Armed Forces have a proud history in Wales and we have traditionally seen a large number of army recruits coming from the South Wales Valleys.

“It is all very well directing people online but army career offices are a proud feature of towns across Wales and the fact that we will lose over half of our recruitment offices by next month is a real shame.

“It seems to me that the army is yet another organisation that may cease to have a presence on our high streets.”

Are they really a proud feature? How novel! I wonder if in years to come people will campaign to retain stores such as Cash converters, cash generators and other exploiters of social deprivation.
