New community allotments for Caerphilly’s Morgan Jones Park

A new community allotment is about to open its gates to a host of green-fingered groups.

The new allotment has been created by Caerphilly Council staff at Caerphilly town’s Morgan Jones Park after they cleared an area which had become overgrown.

Towards the rear of the Green Flag-winning park, a large fenced-off area running alongside Mill Road and the banks of the Nant-y-Aber was cleared and new fencing has now been erected.

Five local community groups have shown interest in acquiring a plot. These are Friends of the Earth, Tyfu Café, YGG Caerffili, CHAT (Community Health Advice and Training) and 1st Caerphilly Scouts.

Simon Beacham, Area Parks Officer for the Caerphilly Basin, said: “The community allotment will provide a place where groups can learn how to grow food in a friendly and sociable atmosphere. You don’t need to know anything about gardening or growing. All you need is a pair of hands to help. It’s a great way to socialise and meet new friends in the process.”

Cllr David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, said: “I’d like to encourage our residents to become part of a community allotment group. You’ll get the benefits of fresh air, exercise, and home grown produce and it’s a great way to meet people and make new friends.”

Three additional community plots may become available in the future at Morgan Jones Park, for further information please contact Simon Beacham on 07887942410.
