Caerphilly Miners’ Centre project elects new chair

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:38, Wednesday August 7th, 2013.

A charity which aims to transform the former Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital into a community centre has elected a new chairman.

Caerphilly MP Wayne David is the new chairman and director of the board at Caerphilly Miners’ Centre for the Community.

Former chair Jeff Cuthbert, Caerphilly’s AM, was forced to step down from his role as chair of the charity after his recent promotion in the Welsh Government to Tackling Poverty Minister.

Mr David said: “I am delighted to be the new chair. I hope to continue the good work of Jeff Cuthbert AM who has done so much to take this project forward. This is an exciting initiative and I look forward to “The Miners” once again being an important community facility.”

Also unanimously elected as company directors until September 2014 were: Val Baynton, Gordon Bradley, Sarah Bradley, Tracy Breadmore Lammas, Graham De Vall (Treasurer), Doreen Ellis, Chris Hodson, Angela Jones, Cath Lewis, Andy Mudie, John Poyner and Gwyneth Smart

The members of the board come from across the public, private and voluntary sectors in Caerphilly and the charity has said they bring a wealth of talent, experience, energy and good will.

Katherine Hughes, company secretary, said: “This marks an important milestone in the development of our organisation.

“We are hugely thankful to Jeff Cuthbert, AM and the board for leading the Caerphilly Miners Centre from its inception to where it is today. We welcome the positive endorsement and enthusiastic support of our members and volunteers.

“With such a strong board led by Wayne David, MP, we can look forward to achieving our vision of a centre for the community carved out of the miners’ legacy of mutuality, collaboration, community enterprise and self-help.”

• This September the challenge is on to trek the three peaks in Caerphilly – Garth Mountain, Rockwood Mountain and Caerphilly Mountain.

Covering a total distance of 13.25km, participants will be raising money for the Caerphilly Miners’ Project.

All participants must be over 18 for the September 14 walk.

The entry fee is £5 and all entrants must collect a minimum of £30 in sponsorship. More information and application packs are available at www.caerphillyminerscentre.org.uk.

The sponsored walk has been supported and organised by GE Aviation Wales.
