Plaid leader welcomes Caerphilly Council action on ‘Bedroom Tax’

The leader of the Plaid Cymru group on Caerphilly County Borough Council has welcomed action to help those tenants affected by the bedroom tax.

Earlier in the summer the Plaid group submitted a notice of motion to assist people hit by on bedroom tax, an issue which came before the policy and resources scrutiny committee this week.

Among the recommendations from the Caerphilly Homes Task Group which were approved by the committee was the waiving of limited breaches of tenancy to assist with transfers to smaller properties and awarding tenants affected by the under-occupancy rules additional points to help with their transfer.

A recommendation to insist that people who fall behind on rent attend compulsory money management classes – which was opposed by Plaid Cymru – was thrown out.

Councillor Colin Mann, leader of the Plaid group, said: “I’m pleased the Labour group recognised the importance of this issue following our motion tabled during the summer.

“It is important that the council do everything possible to protect the vulnerable tenants we have responsibility for.

Plaid’s housing spokesperson Lyn Ackerman added: “There is a huge lack of suitable accommodation to move into and I support the reclassification of properties wherever possible to ease the burden on people who just do not have the income to cope with the cuts.”
