YOUNG FILMMAKERS: Pupils from Lewis School Pengam won the overall prize for best film

Young filmmakers from across Caerphilly County Borough have been recognised for their outstanding skills at a national awards ceremony.

At the Media4schools awards held at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff last month, schools scooped the prestigious awards for their films.

Best edited film went to Oakdale’s Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary School for ‘The Possessed’.

Bedwas Junior School took the best animation award for their film ‘Just Like That’.

Another Caerphilly County Borough school, Lewis School, Pengam, won best edited film for its film, ‘Stop Running In The Corridor’.

The tenth annual Media4schools Awards recognised the winners of the competition, which attracted more than 300 entries from across the country.

The awards aim to highlight the hard work and commitment shown by schools and colleges across Wales involved with film-making, with an opportunity for winners to showcase their talents on the big screen at the event.

At the ceremony, which had an audience of more than 350 including industry professionals, 13 awards were handed out in primary and secondary school categories covering editing, camera work, sports, presenting, animation community and sports.

Sponsors included S4C, Wales Millennium Centre and Sony UK Technology Centre.

The panel of judges was made up of representatives from across the sector, including S4C, Sony, Film Agency Wales, WRU, Wales Millennium Centre, Ffenest media and Boom Pictures.

All the winners were presented with their awards by one of the many VIPs at the event, with Lewis School Pengam winning the Best Overall Film and taking home a Sony camcorder, tripod and boom board, courtesy of Sony.

Michael Roberts, director of Ffenest media and organiser of the event, praised all the entrants for making this year’s awards the best yet.

He said: “This year, I am confident that we have confirmed our position as the largest awards ceremony of its kind with a record of over 300 entries,” he said.

“Once again we have received a fantastic number of entries of an extremely high standard, which of course made the judging very difficult. I would like to congratulate all of our finalists for their magnificent achievements.

“A big thank you to our presenters, judges and partners for their help in delivering the awards including Wales Millennium Centre, Morvah, Boom Pictures, Ffenest media and Wilkinson Public Relations for their kind support.

“I’d also like to thank Welsh band Swnami who opened the ceremony with a fantastic set, and finally to all the schools, community groups and all who entered the competition for their hard work and enthusiasm.”
