A walking route named in honour of South Wales Echo cartoonist Grenfell Jones has been vandalised just 15 months after it opened.

Better known to fans as ‘Gren’, the Hengoed-born cartoonist captured Valleys’ life with his distinctive drawings for more than 40 years.

To commemorate Gren’s life and work, the council commissioned cut-outs of his illustrations to form the three-mile Gren Way walk.

The walk was officially unveiled in October 2012, but several of the signs have now been damaged by vandals.
A “dismayed” Maesycwmmer resident contacted Caerphilly Observer to tell us about the damage.

Our reader, who wised to remain anonymous, said: “Very sad that the majority of new signage to the walk have been pointlessly vandalised near the viaduct.”

A spokesman for Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “We are extremely disappointed to learn that the ‘Gren Way’ artwork at Hengoed Viaduct has been vandalised.

“We would ask the local community to remain vigilant, and ask anyone with any information regarding this damage to contact Gwent Police.”
