A469 New Tredegar to Pontlottyn closed due to landslide

The A469 between New Tredegar and Pontlottyn remains closed to traffic following a landslide.

The ground movement has caused cracks in the road and a burst water main.

Technical specialists have assessed the carriageway and advised that the road is not suitable for any vehicles, cyclists or pedestrian use.

Engineers will carry out further monitoring over the coming days, but it is anticipated that the road will remain closed for at least the next two weeks to allow monitoring of any further carriageway movement and any urgent repair work that needs to be undertaken.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has said it is difficult to estimate at this stage when the road is likely to be partially or fully reopened.

In terms of public transport, there will be significant changes to Monday to Saturday bus services from Monday 10 February 2014.
Route 1 Bargoed – Deri – Fochriw – Pontlottyn – Rhymney – Merthyr Tydfil
This service will operate every 30 minutes during the daytime.
No change to Sunday Service

Route 2 Bargoed – New Tredegar – Phillipstown – Pontlottyn – Rhymney – Merthyr Tydfil
Route 3 Bargoed – Brithdir – Pontlottyn – Abertysswg – Rhymney – Prince Charles Hospital – Merthyr Tydfil

These services will be split as follows:
At the Bargoed end, buses will operate on a circular basis.
One bus per hour will depart Bargoed as route 3 and operate via Brithdir to Tirphil then return as service 2 via Phillipstown, New Tredegar and Aberbargoed to Bargoed.
One bus per hour will operate in the other direction ie. out as route 2 via Aberbargoed, New Tredegar and Phillipstown to Tirphil then return as route 3 via Brithdir to Bargoed.
Most buses on these circulars become route 1 when they arrive at Bargoed Interchange to allow onward travel to Merthyr Tydfil, Pontlottyn and Rhymney. Likewise, most route 1 buses arriving in Bargoed go on to routes 2 or 3.

Another service 3 will operate every 2 hours between Merthyr Tydfil, Prince Charles Hospital, Rhymney and Abertysswg and terminate at Pontlottyn Square.
Passengers for Prince Charles Hospital can also catch Route 1 to Merthyr Tydfil Bus Station and use Route 27 to connect to the hospital.

Route 4 Tredegar – Rhymney – Abertysswg – Pontlottyn – Bargoed – Ystrad Mynach
Daytime services provided by Harris Coaches are unchanged.
Evening services provided by Stagecoach will operate between Pontlottyn Square and Bargoed via Deri. Unfortunately there will be no evening service to Brithdir, Tirphil and New Tredegar however trains will continue to operate as normal.

This article originally stated the road was closed solely due to a burst water main. Welsh Water contacted us to correct this inaccuracy.
