A team of school cooks have been served up a top award for their hard work.

Staff at Abercarn Primary School were named School Catering Team of the Year at the Lead Association for Catering in Education (LACA) awards.

The council’s ‘Meals on Wheels ‘service, called Meals Direct, was also honoured for its work winning the Specialist Catering Team of the Year award.

Overall, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s catering teams were nominated for four awards.

Cllr David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, said: “I’d like to congratulate the Abercarn Primary and Meals Direct catering teams on winning these prestigious awards, their hard work and dedication is demonstrated by the high standards continually achieved within education catering.”

Kate Davies, of St Gwladys Primary School, Bargoed, Caerphilly, has been named Welsh School Chef of the Year 2014 in another competition run by LACA.

Kate will now go on to represent Wales in the National Final in Hampshire in May and will compete against nine other regional champions.
