Ystrad Mynach station gets Welsh Government funding

News | Gareth Hill | Published: 09:00, Monday March 24th, 2014.

Ystrad Mynach train station will get £2m funding to improve access.

The £2m will pay for a new footbridge and two passenger lifts to cross platforms as well as improve disabled access.

Construction will start later this month and is due to be completed in the end of 2014.

The  money is part of £12m Welsh Government funding that will also improve  Llandaf, Machynlleth, Radyr and Chirk and comes after £1.6 worth of improvements to Ystrad Mynach station were announced in December 2013.

Transport Minister Edwina Hart said: “This scheme will greatly improve access to a number of stations and ensure more people can use the train.

“Public transport is a vital way for many people, including some of the most vulnerable in our society, to access jobs and services and I want to make sure our rail stations are accessible to all”

The programme is funded by £7m from the Welsh Government and £5m from the Department for Transport and Network Rail will be carrying out the work.

Mark Langman, Route Managing Director Network Rail Wales said: “The enhancements will help passengers cross more easily between platforms and step-free access not only benefits disabled passengers or those with reduced mobility, but also people with children, heavy luggage or shopping.”

This is a much needed investment and will tackle the obvious problems that persist at Ystad Mynach station at present. All services should be made available for all and I look forward to the works taking place.

Improvements were promised years ago for this station I filled in a questionnaire and it was about 2001-03.
