Cllr Keith Reynolds is set to become the new leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council after being elected head of the Labour group on May 6.
Cllr Reynolds will become leader if formally elected at the council’s Annual General Meeting tomorrow, May 8.
The change comes after current leader, Cllr Harry Andrews, announced his retirement to spend more time with his family.
Cllr Reynolds, who represents Aberbargoed, is currently deputy leader and will be replaced in that role by Cllr Barbara Jones who represents St James.
Cllr Gerald Jones will remain as the other deputy leader if the decisions of the Labour group are ratified by full council.
My genuine congratulations to Councillor Barbara Jones, well deserved,
and I am sure she will bring some stability to the Cabinet.
However,
Barbara has NO experience of running a potting shed!!! How on earth she
can be expected to take a firm hand with a group of hairy necked,
testosterone loaded, blinkered labour `men, I have my doubts as to her
effectiveness, largely due to her gender and how she will be treated by
those who should be her equals, so, will she earn her £30,000 plus her
pension contributioned salary? or just go along for the ride before she is
due to retire.
Now, over to Councillor Kieth Reynolds, a man of
complete integrity and honesty in his dealings with the governance of
our Borough during his time as Deputy Leader, of that I have no doubt,
and nor should any else. But, how can a person who so badly got it wrong
in respect to supporting what has been described by the Auditor General
for Wales, as unlawful activity by Keith Reynolds senior advisers,
including his right hand legal advisor, and as a person who VOTED `FOR` THE HUGE HIKE IN
PAY TO THE MEN NOW DUE TO STAND TRIAL FOR THAT ACTIVITY IN BRISTOL
CROWN COURT, now become leader of the disgraced Caerphilly Council, when
he, himself, played a major role in that nationwide disgrace?.
There
are so many young, fresh, intellectually suited labour Councillors on
Caerphilly council who should have been considered for the roles on
offer, there should have been, in my view, a reshuffle, or, a cull, of
Cabinet Members and
posts, and these people should have been replaced by new fresh thinking
and untarnished young local politicians who have already demonstrated
their civic credentials, only by such a move, which is now a missed
opportunity, would labour regain power of the authority at the next
election, the Caerphilly council is diseased with political nepotism and
the ratepayers and the Borough are worse off because of it. There is a
distinct feeling that Labour on Caerphilly Council are returning to the
old days of inequality and lack of political opportunity for a
refreshed, renewed, application to civic issues
