Volunteers clear eight tonnes of litter across Caerphilly County Borough

News | | Published: 09:31, Monday May 12th, 2014.

More than eight tonnes of litter has been cleaned from the streets of Caerphilly County Borough as part of a council campaign.

Community volunteers have taken part in a host of events since Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Big Spring Clean campaign began in March.

Last year’s campaign collected more than 49 tonnes of litter and fly-tipped waste in three months.

This year, Fochriw Primary School and St James Primary School, in Caerphilly, have pledged to help spruce up their local area and staff at Tesco Crossways, in Caerphilly, have been out and about tidying up the land surrounding the store.

Cllr Dave Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said: “In addition to the council’s routine clean up patrols, individuals and groups have helped to clean up areas off the beaten track and helped to make our environment a cleaner greener place to live work and enjoy.

“It is humbling to see so many people taking up the challenge to do their bit, and this demonstrates that there is a lot of pride in our area.”

The next community clean up events take place at Holly Road Flats, Ty Sign on Thursday May 15 at 11am and Fochriw, Pontlottyn and Rhymney on Tuesday May 20 at 10am.
