Caerphilly schools get Green Flag for environmental efforts

News | | Published: 15:00, Wednesday May 21st, 2014.

More than 60 Caerphilly County Borough schools have been awarded an Eco School Green Flag for their environmental efforts.

In total, 61 schools have been given the award.

Of these, 16 schools have been awarded two Green Flags, 21 schools have three while 11 schools have achieved the Platinum Award for four Green Flags.

To achieve Green Flag status, schools have to set up an eco committee led by pupils, complete an environmental review of what the school currently does to be more sustainable and draw up a plan for improvement.

Cllr Ken James, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, said: “This is an impressive landmark illustrating the dedication of the schools in Caerphilly County Borough to improve their sustainability.

“Our schools have really taken ownership of the Eco Schools programme and instigated real change in their schools and across the wider community. It’s wonderful to see our youngsters caring for their local environment and setting the benchmark for future generations.”

Or, successfully brainwashing the next generation with the burden of taking on the whole world’s environmental problems.

This whole thing is pathetic, a waste of money and does nothing but indoctrinate.

Seriously? An Eco committee, environmental action plan etc… It’s just nonsense. Primary schools are doing this too. Furthered by debate about global warming. Scientists don’t even agree on if it’s man-caused as there’s no evidence either way.

Though I don’t see anything wrong with pupils being educated on environmental issues I do wonder about the content. In my school days we were ecouraged to respect wildlife, save energy, be aware of pollution and reduce waste. The good lessons I received in school and at home have remained with me and I am mindful about the environmental impact of everything I do.

Like Dean I suspect that the advice has now been ‘modernised’ to the man made climate change fad. This is merely a theory, the data set available is too small to be of use. I am all in favour of educating our young people to care for the environment which does pay dividends locally. I am not keen on indoctrination based on a theoretical model of mankind’s impact of global climate.

Yet the children are ferried to and from these eco green flag schools each day by their parents in their polar ice cap melting, ozone layer destroying, gas guzzling cars.
