Charity Contact the Elderly is hoping to launch a local branch in the Caerphilly area.
The charity organises monthly Sunday tea parties, provided by a rota of voluntary hosts.
The hosts can be individual families or organisations such as church groups.
For the tea party, Contact the Elderly gathers together a group of six to eight guests who live alone and are at least 75-years-old.
Using volunteer drivers, the charity takes the guests to the hosts who provide a traditional Sunday tea.
The charity’s local co-ordinator, David Tolley, explained: “Research clearly indicates the many benefits of the teas from fewer visits to GPs to increased confidence, from a reduced sense of loneliness to feeling a part of the community again.
“Sunday afternoons are a particularly lonely point in the week for older people living alone when many community services are not available.
“We aim to relieve isolation and loneliness among people over 75 who live alone.
“The essence of what we do is giving a lifeline of friendship to frail, lonely older people. So many people over 75 spend too much time on their own. Some rarely see anyone but the postman.
“Perhaps they have been widowed, or perhaps they never married, or had children. It’s easy to think family take care of our older generation, but for many people their family may live far away.”
He added: “We are trying to establish a group in the Caerphilly area from this autumn. The immediate priority is to identify half a dozen volunteer hosts – individuals or organisations – who would be willing to provide a tea for a total of up to a dozen guests and drivers twice a year.
“The only requirements are that there should be a minimum of steps, a downstairs toilet and a range of seating appropriate to the age of the guests. The teas can be simple affairs: cake, biscuits, sandwiches along with tea, coffee, squash and water.
“The other priority at this stage is to identify a few volunteer drivers, both regular monthly ones and reserve ones who might be called upon once every three months or so.
“The commitment would be about two and a half hours one Sunday afternoon a month. And they get to sample the tea and cake.”
