Caerphilly council staff and councillors raise £4,500 for elderly charity

News | | Published: 11:00, Tuesday August 19th, 2014.

Councillors and staff at Caerphilly County Borough Council have raised more than £4,500 for a charity that helps elderly people who have suffered abuse.

A cheque for £4,540 was given to Action on Elder Abuse on July 28.

The cash was raised as part of World Elder Awareness Day when 60 people abseiled 120 feet off Penallta Rock. Money was also raised with a raffle and cake sale.

Deputy council leader Cllr Barbara Jones took part in the abseil with her daughter-in-law Susanne and granddaughter Lizzie.

She said: “I am so pleased that we were able to raise such an amazing amount of money for an incredible charity.

“Staff worked enormously hard to make all the fundraising activities possible, and over 60 people braved the abseil, I’d like to say thank you to all of them.

“As well as raising important funds, hopefully we have also helped to highlight the issue of elder abuse and the charity ‘Action on Elder Abuse’ which does outstanding work in protecting some of the most venerable members of our society.”
