A man who handed a home-made pipe bomb in at Risca police station has been jailed for three years.

Mark Wise, 51, of Sebastopol, near Pontypool, pleaded guilty to making explosives at a hearing at Cardiff Crown Court.

The incident on March 4 this year resulted in homes being evacuated and a 100m cordon was put in place while a controlled explosion was carried out.

Gwent Police Inspector Vicki Townsend said: “We always take these incidents very seriously as they can pose a risk to the safety of the public.

“This incident caused disruption to businesses and residents while the cordon was in place and we remain grateful for their co-operation and support. We hope that the conviction and sentence will serve as a warning to others.”
