The annual fireworks display at Caerphilly Castle has this year raised £4,000 for charity.
The event, organised by Caerphilly Town Council, saw an estimated 15,000 people descend on the town to watch the display held on Saturday November 1.
Around 60 volunteers from charitable organisation Caerphilly Lions Club and the Urdd youth movement collected contributions from the public on the evening, with funds raised going towards the 2015 Urdd Eisteddfod, being held in Llanciach Fawr.
A spokesman from Caerphilly Lions said: “We would like to say a big thank you to all those generous supporters who helped to ‘rocket, whiz and bang’ the final total raised at this thoroughly enjoyable evening to a respectable £4,000.”

I would have thought the pyrotechnics alone cost considerably more than £4,000. It’s less than 30p per visitor. The people selling those awful electric spinning lights for kids probably took more money. It was an excellent show as ever but there more be a better way to raise money for charities.
Dave Bull, from memory, the cost of last year’s display was £14,000 and money raised for charity was £2,500. My figures may be slightly out but you get the picture.
The display is just that, it is not primarily a fund raiser for charity. Some people pretend otherwise but the figures speak for themselves.
Richard, I notice that the £4,000 collected for CHARITY is going to the `Urdd Eisteddfod,`, would that in addition to th £10,000 Caerphill Town councillors have already just given, from the public purse, ratepayers money, to the same Urdd Eisteddfod funds?,
a CHARITY?
Yes Trefor, this appears to be the case. The council was approached by the Urdd in July for the sum of £5,000 to help enable them to hold the eisteddfod in Nelaon.
I tabled a motion that we should grant this money, £2,500 this financial year and £2,500 on the next financial year, as I believe the Urdd does much good work in Wales for both English and Welsh speaking youth.
This motion was not voted on until the October meeting where it was defeated, by way of the Chairman’s casting vote, in favour of sponsorship of events which will cost the council £10,000. I voted against this, and in favour of my origial motion, as I believe supplying the £5,000 initially requested was the correct action for the council to take.
I hope this clarifies the donations and how they were arrived at.
Richard, I have looked at the minutes of the meeting you refer to in your comment but, there is something odd about the voting by some Councillors, I see that two of the six Plaid Cymru Councillors present declared an interest in the issue of the Erdd Eisteddfod, and, a fourth Councillor was in the Chair and therefore not normally able to vote, this left three Plaid Cymru Councllors to Four opposition Councillors? so, how did the Council carry the vote to give away £10,000 of Caerphilly residents money on a minority vote? I also note from the same minutes that the Chairman (the fourth Plaid Cymru Councillor who voted) may not be entitled to do so due to having already had the privilage of attending the groups inception dinner, was there a conflict of interest issue there which precludes, in this case the meeting chairman, to vote at all????
Thanks for the figures Richard. I hope the Courthouse makes a sizeable donation from the entrance charges it earned from customers!
