Investigations are continuing after a woman was murdered in a reported act of cannibalism. The suspected murderer died after being Tasered by police officer.

Gwent Police were called to an incident at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel in High Street, Argoed, at 1.23am on Thursday November 6 after reports that a man was attacking a woman.

Both were still at the scene when police arrived and officers fired a Taser at the man and arrested him.

The 22-year-old woman, from Blackwood, was later pronounced dead at the scene and police are now investigating her death as murder.

Whilst under arrest, police said, the 34-year-old man from Blackwood became unresponsive and officers and paramedics administered first aid but has since been pronounced deceased.

Media reports have suggested that the man, named by the Daily Mirror as Matthew Williams, 34, was found consuming body parts of the 22-year-old woman.

Security staff at the hotel reportedly burst into the room when Williams refused to let them in, and found him “eating her to death”. The police were then called.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which has launched its own investigation.

IPCC Commissioner for Wales, Jan Williams, said: “I would like to express my sincere condolences to the families of the deceased at this sad and difficult time. Our investigators are gathering all relevant evidence to understand the full circumstances of what happened. We have made contact with the man’s family, and will be meeting with them later today to explain our role and our independent investigation.”
