The names of ten fallen soldiers from the Tir-y-Berth area who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars are now proudly displayed on a plaque at the village’s war memorial – following a request from a local resident.

Eileen McGrane, 88, from Tir-y-Berth initially contacted her local ward member Cllr Hefin David with details of her request.

Mrs McGrane and her neighbours personally remember those from Tir-y-Berth who lost their lives during the Second World War, and felt it would be a fitting tribute to the men from the village who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Cllr David contacted Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Principal Officer for Outdoor Facilities and Bereavement Services, Mike Headington, and following extensive research into identifying the names of all the men from the village who lost their lives in the wars, the impressive plaque was unveiled last week.

Mrs McGrane said: “The memorial is lovely and I feel very proud that the council has done all this for me. I’ve wanted to see this done for some time, as I knew every single one of the boys who lost their lives in World War II named on there.”

She added: “I can’t thank Mike and Cllr Hefin David enough for their help in making this happen – they have kept in touch with me all the way through to let me know what has been going on. I’m very pleased.”

Cllr Hefin David said: “Mrs McGrane has led this process and has found many of the names of the local men listed on the memorial. We were very happy to be able to help her honour these local men.”

The plaque was unveiled in readiness for the forthcoming remembrance service and laying of wreaths, which will take place on Sunday November 9 at 11am at the Tir-y-Berth war memorial.
