Caerphilly Plaid Cymru leader calls for rethink on Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr doctor withdrawal plans

Plaid Cymru’s group leader on Caerphilly Council, Cllr Colin Mann, has called for a rethink on plans to withdraw junior doctors from Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr (YYF) in Ystrad Mynach.

He will raise the issue directly with the chair and chief executive of Aneurin Bevan University Heath Board.

Cllr Mann said that proposals by Wales Postgraduate Deanery to withdraw junior doctors were causing dismay among residents of the county borough.

He said: “The reasons behind the decision should be addressed. The message I’m getting loud and clear is that many people don’t attend YYF because they are not sure what services are available. Things are more settled now but many people still remember the early days when many were sent to other hospitals, at times for treatment which they should have received at YYF.

“It is important to enhance the level of treatment available in the Minor Injuries Unit and properly publicise it so it is used and this is up to the health board. A 24-hour service has been the consistent promise given to the 170,000 plus population of the Caerphilly County Borough and this promise must not be broken.

He added: “I intend raising this matter at a forthcoming meeting with the Chair and Chief Executive of Aneurin Bevan Health Board later this month and I have also written to the Postgraduate Deanery urging them to re-consider the matter.”
