An amateur photographer from Caerphilly has taken first prize in a competition for her image questioning presumptions of old age.

Meirwen Jones won the 16-and-over category in charity Age Cymru’s photography competition.

Her picture of a grandfather arm-wrestling with his grandson called Who said I’m too old? impressed judges inthe contest, which was launched during Age Positive Week in September.

Ms Jones said: “I have always had an interest in photography, but decided to take some community classes three years ago to gain a better understanding of what I could achieve with my camera.

“My tutor Peter Britton encouraged me to explore all aspects of photography and experience the world through a lens.

“I love capturing the moments that hold a memory forever – some are planned others are spontaneous.

“I was pleased that the photo captured the depth of the special relationship that Reg has with his grandson Ben.”

The theme of the competition was positive ageing and celebrating the positive aspects of ageing in Wales.

Victoria Lloyd, of Age Cymru said: “Congratulations to Meirwen on winning the top prize in our Age Positive Week photography competition for which we had over 80 entries.

“The standard of entries in the contest was high but Meirwen’s keen eye put her ahead of the field.

“She has captured a magical moment between a grandfather and his grandson.

“Who said I’m too old? was unanimously selected by the judges, who thought it was a beautiful image depicting a very positive intergenerational message.

“Well done Meirwen from all of us at Age Cymru – you are a worthy winner.”
