A young mother has been given a Special Achievement award at the Community Education Awards for her commitment to learning.

Penny Roberts, 23, has achieved gored units in first aid and domestic violence awareness after joining the young parents aspect of the Family Engagement Project.

She also holds certificates in outdoor pursuits and budgeting, to name but a few.

The mother, who left school with no qualifications is now volunteering within Caerphilly Youth Service.

She was also nominated for the YMCA Margaret Jones Learner of the Year award.

Councillor Rhianon Passmore, Caerphilly County Borough Council Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said “Despite having a challenging start, Penny has shown that with hard work and determination, you can succeed.

“The Family Engagement Project helps many people within Caerphilly County Borough to improve their lives, both academically and personally.”
