A young volunteer from Bedwas has scooped a prestigious national award for her work with charity St John.

Bedwas High School pupil Rhiannon Bartlett, 16, won the Cadet of the Year honour at the St John Cymru Wales Youth Awards.

Rhiannon will now be an ambassador for St John Cymru Wales and represent the charity at events across the country during her year in office.

She said: “I’m so pleased to have won the Cadet of the Year Award, especially as I was up against such a strong group of Cadets.

“Being part of St John has taught me many skills, not just practical but also personal. The charity is not just there to teach people how to save lives, but also gives Cadets a strong grounding in teamwork and interpersonal skills. I have learned so much from those around me.

“I’m really looking forward to doing my bit to show others how good it is being a part of St John Cymru Wales.”

Daniel Lyons, the charity’s youth development manager, said: “Rhiannon will be a great Cadet of the Year and a fine ambassador for St John Cymru Wales.”
