Bad weather made Caerphilly Mountain Road ‘impassable’ this morning, February 23, motorists claimed.
Snow, sleet and hail causing poor driving conditions and Mountain Road became increasingly slippery.
Some commuters took to Twitter to voice their frustration.

Tweet Cardiff warned: “Whatever you guys do, don’t venture over Caerphilly mountain , 20 to 30 cars stranded due to ice.”
Bek Park said: “Taken me 50 min (sic) to not get to work, now back at home until Caerphilly mountain clears.”

A Caerphilly County Borough Council spokesperson said: “Temperatures overnight in the Caerphilly basin area remained above freezing, and this morning the council’s highways team have been proactive in deploying gritters as the result of an isolated hail storm in the Caerphilly area.”
I had to travel back from Llanishen at just before nine and sure enough the road was blocked with traffic. I turned around and drove up the lane from Rhiwbina and got back without difficulty.
I hope people remember that when the issue of an Eastern by-pass becomes news again, as it does every few years, that this idea is a non starter due to the fact that the mountain road almost always becomes impassable in any bad weather. Let’s hope that this by-pass and the housing estates that would be built along it never comes to pass.
“A Caerphilly County Borough Council spokesperson said: “… the council’s highways team have been proactive in deploying gritters as the result of an isolated hail storm in the Caerphilly area.”
If they sent them out after the hail storm, they’ve been reactive. Proactive would have been if they had sent the gritters out before the hail storm.
…it was even forecast that we would be waking to bad weather and winters storms brought in by Canadian weather systems. So, why not grit, and grit properly prior to the event??
It’s the council all over for you. They probably do not check forecasts…unless of course it’s a forecast on the cost of another useless project before they throw our money at it.
