Staff at Llancaiach Fawr Manor are learning Welsh ahead of the Urdd National Eisteddfod, which is being held at the 16th Century house in May.

The majority of workers at the Manor are not fluent in Welsh, although some of the staff started a Welsh evening course at the Welsh for Adults Gwent Centre after being inspired to learn by the Eisteddfod visit.

Diane Walker, manager at Llancaiach Fawr, said: “There are three of us from Llancaiach Fawr that started on our six year journey to become fluent Welsh speakers in September.

“Even though I was brought up in England, my mother is a Welsh speaker from Abergele and I always wanted to learn the language.

“Twenty more of the staff will be starting a taster course at the end of February so that they will know basic Welsh to welcome the Urdd visitors to our historical site.

“We very much look forward to welcoming the Eisteddfod to Llancaiach Fawr and to seeing our grounds transformed.”
