Welsh Liberal Democrats select Caerphilly and Islwyn General Election candidates

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have selected their General Election candidates for the Caerphilly and Islwyn constituencies.

Environmental academic Dr Aladdin Ayesh will stand in Caerphilly, and, while Dr Brendan D’Cruz will be standing in Islwyn.

Dr D’Cruz, chair of the local party, said: “The Lib Dems have had a moderating influence on the UK coalition government during difficult times, helping to stabilise the economy and get people back into work.”

    The Lib Dems polled a respectable 15% of the vote in Caerphilly last time around. I’d say its odds on they will lose their deposit this time. Left of centre voters certainly won’t be lending their support to the Lib Dems at this election. Their support for the Bedroom Tax and the trebling of tuition fees has stuffed them big time.

    The deception displayed by the Lib Dem Leader, in exchange for a seat at the top table with his Conservative allies, and his total disloyalty to those who elected him on broken, explicit, promises and assurances have made it a dead cert that the Lib Dems are spent flush. How they have the brass neck to knock on doors and expect people to believe anything they say is a demonstration of thier dishonest approach to politics. They will be vacating the green benches in Parliarment to be replaced by Labour MPs come May.

    The fact they have propped up a Tory Government and supported Tory Policies for five years is proof if more proof were needed that they represent nothing more than that expounded by the Conservatives, neither the Lib Dems nor the Tories were elected to `govern` by the people of the Country they assumed that position and linned their pockets in the process.

    The problem for the Lib Dems, apart from not being very strong in either constiuency, is that they decided to enter into a coalition as a very junior partner. Their leaders were so determined to get their hands on some of the plum jobs that they failed to see the implication of forming a government with the Tories.

    It would have been smarter to agree to support a minority Tory government on some issues in return for Tory votes for some Lib Dem policies, no increase in tuition fees for instance. They would have then been able to go into an election pointing out that voting for them was not a wasted vote. But, they didn’t and this time around it will be deposits lost in both constituencies.

    There is of course another runner in this and next years Assembly Elections, and they are the Plaid Cymru Candidates, With their Leader Leanne Woods, and their local longstanding Representative Lindsay Whittle both being very respected, professional, and voter centred people who, from my experience are prepared to listen, debate, and, action concerns of residents when approached, their candidates will be a force NOT to be ignored, and with Lib Dems off the radar their positions become more significant, they are now largely, but not completely, a much more `friendly` party than they once were.
