The mother of a young musician from Blackwood, who died from cancer, is raising money to set up a memorial award in his name.
Adam Morris, 23, passed away on February 22 after being diagnosed with a rare tumour in June 2013.
He was ill throughout his final year studying music at the University of South Wales, but still managed to achieve a 2:1 degree.
The former Rhymney Comprehensive pupil started playing guitar in school, where he formed his first band, and his mother Louise Mann hopes to reward an “innovative and creative musician” in the school in Adam’s memory.
She has launched a crowd fund and hopes to split the money raised with the award winner and the school to use for an extra curricular music project.
Mrs Mann said: “Adam was a very creative and talented musician and we wanted to do something to create musical aspiration in others and inspire people to think about music in a different way.
“He would not necessarily want the award to go to a straight ‘A’ student but someone who made creative and innovative music.
“The more money we raise the better financially for the school, and if we can keep it up we can encourage more people to take up music. Adam would have wanted that.”
Over the last few years Adam produced electronic music and performed as SingleForSaturday, as well as launching record label B Rec.
He had hopes of being a music producer and Mrs Mann hopes to release his music with the help of his friends, to sell in aid of the award and a future charity in his honour.
Mrs Mann said: “The worst thing for him about the effects of his illness was not the cancer itself, but that he couldn’t do what he wanted to musically.
“He was still being creative, mixing and producing, right up until the last moments.
“He was so keen and so ambitious. I want to facilitate that and help him get as far as he can as he’s not here now to do it.”
