Books containing information about those who fell during the First World War have returned to Blackwood Library.

The three books were created by the Blackwood District Heritage Association and dedicate a page to the memory of each man named on the war memorials in Oakdale, Pontllanfraith and Blackwood.

The three parchment books have travelled across the area for the last year in commemoration of the centenary of the start of the war.

Each page lists a fallen soldier’s enlistment details, name, rank, regiment and how and when they died and were presented back to the library at a memorial service on March 13.

Granville Hale, Chairman of the Blackwood District Heritage Association began the project after noticing his surname on Pontllanfraith war memorial, wondering if the man was any relation.

Mr Hale said: “We took the books to community centres, libraries and schools, it was so successful.

“There were so many people viewing them as they wanted to know about their grandparents and great grandparents.

“It was fully supported by the British Legion and colliery association and the library was very good to us.”

The project also revealed that 13 New Zealand rugby internationals and 17 Welsh players were killed during the war.

In memory, two books were created and presented to the presidents of the respective rugby unions when Wales played the All Blacks last autumn.
