Gwent Police are reminding drivers to lock their vehicles when they leave them unattended after a spate of thefts in the town.
Overnight on Sunday March 22 and into the early hours of Monday March 23, property was stolen from six vehicles on the Castle View estate. A further eight vehicles were broken into across Caerphilly during the previous week.
A range of items of were stolen including money, an iPod, a satellite navigation device, and clothing.
Caerphilly Neighbourhood Sergeant Sarah Greening said: “In the majority of these incidents, the vehicles have been left with unlocked doors or windows and these have been targeted by opportunist thieves.
“I would urge drivers to always make sure they lock their vehicles, even if they are only leaving them for a short period of time. It is also important that all items are removed from view before they leave their vehicle – even something small like loose change can tempt a thief.
“If anyone sees something suspicious in their neighbourhood, no matter how small they think that it may be, then I would encourage them to get in contact with us.”
Anyone with information about these incidents, or vehicle crime in the area, can call Gwent Police on 101.
The Town Centre Residents Association contact the CAERPHILLY COUNTY COUNCIL four weeks ago to request they consider extending the towns CCTV cameras into some of the residential street trouble spots, within 20 minutes of this request landing on the desk of the officer of the Council responsible for the CCTV and the CAERPHILLY SAFETY PARTNERSHIP, the Residents Association hada response telling them ” No Hope of doing that”,
Yet, the Council have applied to the Commissioner which deals with the proper and legal uses of our street cameras, to use those cameras for parking enforement fines.
We now have the Gwent Police advising Residents to lock their cars etc,. Would it be good idea for GwentPolice to support the residents request to talk to the Council about the use of CCTV in the interest of crime and disorder reduction. including thefts from and damage to vehicles in the town?

The local police already do all they can to assist residents in keeping the town safe, and residents do have a responsibility to help them do that, and most do..
